FEDERAL CANDIDATE SPECIES IN NEVADA
As of the date above, the 11 Nevada animal and plant species shown below are candidates for listing as threatened or endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973, as amended (16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.), and are actively under review by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Most federal land management agencies automatically afford candidates the same level of protection and management as they do listed species, so as not to contribute further toward a need to list these species. See the current federal Candidate Notice of Review for more details.
In Nevada, 24 plant species, including all federal threatened and endangered species, are also protected by state law from removal or destruction at any time by any means except under special permit issued by the state forester firewarden (N.R.S. 527.270).
Further information is available on-line for these taxa in our Detailed Rare Plant and Lichen List and Detailed Rare Animal List, and for some taxa in other lists or reports, or as maps or images. The Nevada Rare Plant Atlas provides more comprehensive information, including habitat, life-history, description, threats, survey status, literature sources, and known locations, for many plant taxa. General information is available for nearly all taxa on the NatureServe Explorer web site.
