DEFINITIONS: A species is any species, subspecies, or taxonomic variety of organisms. An occurrence of a species is generally defined as one or more contiguous areas of occupied habitat separated from each other by unoccupied distances of about 0.1 mile or less, and separated by unoccupied distances of more than 0.1 mile from all other occurrences of the same species. Sometimes longer separation distances are used depending on the nature and mobility of the species. Standard-format data are data provided in any form (printed or electronic) other than as ArcView® shape files.

The table below shows the data fields that are available for species-location records in standard and ArcView® formats, organized into categories and provided with short descriptions. Field and code definitions are available on-line for many of these fields and are linked within the descriptions; otherwise they are defined below or may be obtained by contacting us. NOTE: the data in many of the species-level fields are already available in various on-line species lists. ALL DATE FIELDS are now available with 4-digit years and are Year-2000 (Y2K) compliant. Changes since the 17 June 1999 catalog are shown in red (if this sentence appears red).

Any of these fields may be used, singly or in combination, to select specific records of interest from our databases. Fields provided in summary species-location records in standard formats are boldfaced to distinguish them from optional fields that may be included in complete or custom records for an additional fee. Similarly, fields always provided in ArcView® species-location records are boldfaced to distinguish them from optional fields, although there is no additional charge for optional ArcView® fields. NOT provided are the fields in italics (or the entire ArcView® records) for species whose exact locations are considered sensitive, unless special arrangements have first been made (see data limitations). Please be aware that the contents of any of these fields will reflect only data that have been electronically recorded to date. Contact us for any additional unprocessed information that may exist.

COMMNAME	COMMNAME	Common name of the species currently accepted by NVNHP (vernacular name)
IDENT	IDENT	Confidence level that the species of an occurrence is correctly identified. Y=confident, ?=not confident, N=not correctly identified, blank=confident or not assessed. Occurrences marked N are excluded from data provided unless specifically requested.
TAXCLASS	CLASS	The taxonomic class to which a species belongs
ORDER	ORDER	The taxonomic order to which a species belongs
FAMILY	FAMILY	The taxonomic family to which a species belongs
GENUS	GENUS	The taxonomic genus to which a species belongs
MAJORGROUP.SEQ		The number and name of the major taxonomic group (for example, Mammals, Dicots, Mollusks) to which a species belongs, suitable for sorting in a rough linear evolutionary sequence.

SEOTRACK	TRACKED	Tracking status of species at NVNHP. Unless otherwise requested, standard-format data are provided only for species tracked as at-risk. ArcView® data are provided for all species with occurrence records.
SEOTRACK.NAME		The term (At-risk, Watch List, not tracked, or unknown) corresponding to the value in SEOTRACK, indicating the tracking status of a species at NVNHP.

MINELEV.NUM	MINELEV	The lowest elevation, in feet, at which an occurrence is found
MAXELEV.NUM	MAXELEV	The highest elevation, in feet, at which an occurrence is found

STATE.SYMBOL		Two-letter postal code for the primary state in which an occurrence is located
COUNTYNAME	COUNTY	County(ies) of Nevada in which an occurrence is located
LOCALJURIS.NV		City or town in or near which an occurrence is located
MACODE		Managed area code(s) with which an occurrence is associated. These codes are assigned by NVNHP, and reflect the nearby, partial, or complete location of an occurrence within areas such as BLM districts, Forest Service units, private, municipal, and county lands, transportation corridors, ACECs, RNAs, designated Wilderness Areas, Indian reservations, military reservations, etc., based on information available to NVNHP. Private owners are NEVER specifically identified.
MANAME		Short text name for each MACODE
CONTAINED		The containment status of an occurrence for each associated MACODE. Y=occurrence completely contained in the managed area, N=partially contained in the managed area, ?=nearby, or possibly contained in, the managed area.
ARCVIEW.MACODE	MANUMBERS	Managed area code(s) with which an occurrence is associated, along with its containment status for each code. See MACODE and CONTAINED above.
ARCVIEW.OWNERLIST	OWNERLIST	The broad land ownership/management category(ies) within which an occurrence is completely or partially located
ARCVIEW.OWNERMAYBE	OWNERMAYBE	The broad land ownership/management category(ies) near, or possibly within, which an occurrence is located

DIRECTIONS	DIRECTIONS	Text of the directions to the location of an occurrence, generally taken verbatim from the source materials. Corrections or interpretations may subsequently have been applied by NVNHP during the mapping process, and therefore other data fields may not exactly reflect the narrative directions.

EONUM	OCCURRENCE	The sequential 3-digit number assigned to each recorded occurrence of a species in a state
EORANK	EORANK	Rank of the relative quality, condition, viability, defensibility, and state of knowledge of an occurrence based on its global range. A=excellent, B=good, C=marginal, D=poor, E=extant, H=historical, _I=introduced, O=obscure, X=extirpated. Unless specifically requested, standard-format records for extirpated occurrences are normally excluded. ArcView® records of extirpated occurrences are normally included.
EORANKDATE	EORANKDATE	The date EORANK was last updated, or the date of the survey on which the most recent rank is based (Y2K compliant)

BOUNDARIES	BOUNDARIES	Indicates whether (Y) or not (N) an occurrence is mapped as a bounded area (polygon). These polygons are currently not digitized, and are available only on our paper records. A question mark (?) indicates mapped boundaries of questionable validity.
GENDESC	SITEDESCR	General descriptive text of the area in which an occurrence is located, including habitat, associated species, etc.
EOTYPE	EOTYPE	Short text description of how an animal species uses an occurrence site, such as for breeding, roosting, feeding, foraging, wintering, etc.
EODATA	EODATA	Text of data pertaining to the biology, phenotype, behavior, population structure, sampling, etc., of a species at an occurrence
