NEVADA NATIVE PLANT SOCIETY (NNPS) STATUS LISTS
The Nevada Native Plant Society (NNPS) tracks rare and potentially vulnerable native plant species in Nevada under several categories of conservation concern. Lists of the 325 taxa tracked as of the date above, sorted by category (see the 2N column), are presented in sequence below, along with additional status and ranking information. The NNPS category assignments for these taxa are reviewed at least annually at the Nevada Rare Plant Workshop, and are updated as necessary. Because these assignments represent the consensus of dozens of botanical experts and resource professionals throughout Nevada and surrounding states, they are maintained in the databases of the Nevada Natural Heritage Program (NNHP), and are considered by NNHP in making its own status assignments and recommendations.
In general, most or all of the taxa on the NNPS Watch List and above are tracked on NNHP's Sensitive or Watch Lists. Taxa on the NNPS Dropped and Absent lists are no longer of conservation concern to NNPS, but have been in the past. Only taxa of conservation concern to NNPS, now or at some time in the past, have been assigned to a NNPS category. Most species that have been assigned to the Absent (A) category, meaning they were erroneously reported to be in Nevada, have subsequently been deleted entirely from the NNHP databases, and thus no longer appear on the Absent List below. Most of the categories used by NNPS were established when tracking began in the late 1970s. One new category, the Marginal (M) List, was added in April 2000 to facilitate tracking of species that are rare and of conservation concern only or mainly in Nevada, but are much more widespread and secure outside of Nevada. This list is only in its infancy, and will grow much larger in the coming years as the State's flora is evaluated specifically for Marginal taxa. See NNHP's page of Symbol and Data Definitions for detailed descriptions of the various NNPS categories.
More detailed information for most of the taxa below is available in our Detailed Rare Plant and Lichen list, and in the Nevada Rare Plant Atlas, which provides comprehensive information on habitat, life-history, description, threats, survey status, literature sources, and known locations, for many plant taxa. Further information may be available on-line for some taxa in other lists or reports, or as maps or images, and general information is available for nearly all taxa on the NatureServe Explorer web site.
