LIST OF NEVADA LOSSES
(26 February 2001)

As of the date above, this list includes all taxa known to us that once occurred naturally within Nevada's borders, but which are now either extirpated or extinct. Extinct means that the organism no longer exists anywhere, and is gone forever. Extirpated means that the organism no longer exists within a defined portion of its range (in this case, the State of Nevada), but still lives in other areas. The large number of fishes, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates on this list highlights the isolated and fragile nature of wetlands in Nevada, and in turn explains why so many of the state's remaining aquatic taxa are listed as endangered, threatened, sensitive, or at-risk.

One of the primary goals of the Nevada Natural Heritage Program's activities is to help prevent any further avoidable additions to this list through prudent conservation planning. We also hold out hope that one or two of the 23 taxa on this list may someday be rediscovered in the state. Once a taxon has been placed on this list, though, rediscovery has become either highly unlikely or impossible.
