Reno regular meetings are held the first Thursday of February, March, April, May, September, October, and November, from 7-9 pm,
in the lab across the courtyard from the herbarium at 920 Valley Road.
(Directions: from I-80 take the Wells Avenue exit, go south on Wells and
immediately turn right on 7th St. At the stop sign turn right on Valley Road.
After the overpass over I-80 take the first entrance on the right into the
parking lot. Bear left and look for the courtyard on your right. Signs will be posted.) There is usually an optional
dinner with the guest speaker beforehand, at Carrow's Restaurant on the northwest corner of Wells Avenue and 6th
Street at 5:30 pm.
Henderson regular meetings are held the first
Monday of every month, starting at 6:30 pm, at the U.S. Geological Survey
office at 160 N. Stephanie Street in Henderson, Nevada. (Directions: take
I-215 south toward Henderson and exit on Stephanie St. Turn left (north) and we
are located about 1.5 blocks north on Stephanie; take the first right (east)
after Wigwam. The USGS office building is sandwiched between two other office
buildings, Las Vegas College and Old Republic Title Co. OR, if you travel south
towards Henderson on Hwy 95, take the I-215 West exit (exit 61B) and exit right
(west). Stay in the right lane, and Stephanie St. is the next exit after Gibson
St. Go right (north) at the end of the exit ramp, and we are in the middle
office building that has US Geological Survey lettering.) Contact Sue

Upcoming and past meeting
programs are listed below. At least one meeting each year is usually devoted to member slides. Field trips occur throughout spring, summer, and early fall to local and regional areas of botanical interest (see separate listing). There is usually an
December potluck and social at a park or arboretum in the Reno area. Research grants are awarded each year to support work involving Nevada flora. A seed exchange program occurs as members have the time and ability to gather, process, and package seeds.

Alexander, recent Ph.D.
graduate from Oregon State University, will speak about new and interesting
findings from recent Astragalus field work in Nevada.
- Henderson regular meeting (April 7th).
Bob Morris will present information about the Nevada Cooperative
Extension Service and their Master Gardeners’ program.
- Southern Nevada (April 12-13). Cactus and Succulent Society Sale. Location:

- Southern Nevada (April 19th). International Earth Day. We will
have a booth at the fifth annual Summerlin Earthfaire on Saturday, April 19,
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Summerlin Centre Community Park, 1800 South Town Center Drive (between Sahara and Charleston),
Las Vegas. The event will feature live musical entertainment, interactive
displays, children’s environmental art and learning activities, food, and
exhibits.
March 2008:

- Henderson regular meeting (December 3rd).
Third annual NNPS Christmas Pot Luck. Please bring photos to share with
the group. We will also have an update on the poster, will be announcing the
results from the elections, and discussing next years events and activities. The
more the merrier!!
November 2007: (ANNUAL MEETING AND ELECTIONS)
- Reno regular meeting (November 1st).
Steve Caicco, botanist with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in Reno, will
give a presentation on East African Ecosystems. This will have an
emphasis on the Afro-alpine flora of central Kenya.
- Henderson regular meeting (November 5th).
Nancy Hall, from the Friends of Gold Butte, will talk about the
restoration work that in going on and the challenges facing the Gold Butte
area. Adriane Zacmanidis, from Friends of Nevada Wilderness, will
be giving a presentation on her non-profit organization and what they are doing
to protect wilderness in Nevada. We will also discuss the poster and be holding
elections for the southern Chairperson positions, so please make every effort to
attend.
October 2007:

- Henderson regular meeting (October 1st).
- Reno regular meeting (October 4th). Larry
Taylor and Gary Monroe will present Botany, Geology, and Topography of 2007 NNPS
field trips. Anyone else with photographs from the 2007 season is welcome to
join in! (If you will need any special projection equipment contact Jim
Morefield 775-684-2902 or Arnold Tiehm 775-329-1645 well ahead of time).
September 2007:
- Reno regular meeting (September 6th).
NNPS President Ann Pinzl will be giving
a presentation on her trip earlier this year to the Amazon. There will be
slides, focusing on the botany of that area..
- Henderson regular meeting (Monday
September 10th). Ann Pinzl, NNPS president will
give a talk on her latest adventures in the Amazon. The title of her
presentation is: Visiting the Amazon: A Personal Account. She will share
her photos of the region, the people, and of course, the flora.
July 2007:
- Henderson regular meeting (July 2nd). We
will be having a follow-up to May's poster meeting. Fred Edwards will
give the group a
status report on the poster development progress. We encourage everyone to come
and participate in poster development.
June 2007:
- Henderson regular meeting (June 4th).
John Brinda from UNLV will be giving a presentation and workshop on the
mosses found in Southern Nevada and surrounding areas. He will bring live specimens for our examination and identification.
May 2007:
- Reno regular meeting (May 3rd). Annual
member slides show. All members are invited to display their native plant
slides, particularly from NNPS field trips. Please contact John Reid at (714)
457-3149 beforehand if you are planning to display
slides at this meeting.
- Henderson regular meeting (May 7th).
Fred Edwards will lead the group through selecting plants to be included
in the poster and other items related to the poster. Sharon Schaffer
has been selected as the artist for the poster and she will be bringing some of
her work for our group to view. If anyone would like to join the poster
sub-committee, please contact Sonja.
April 2007:
- Henderson regular meeting (April 2nd).
Pat Leary, co-author of The Flora of the Spring Mountains of Clark and
Nye County, Nevada, will host a workshop looking at a specific family or
genus (to be announced, due to lack of rainfall).
- Las Vegas, Rare Plant Committee meeting (April 3rd).

Bruce Eisner of the California Tahoe
Conservancy will discuss his agency's Lands Acquisition program, in which
small parcels of land are acquired and restored to native vegetation, with
limited public usage as parks, picnic areas, etc.
- Henderson regular meeting (March 5th).
Julie Draper will be giving the group a
follow-up presentation to her 2005 presentation on cotyledons of the Mojave
Desert.
February 2007:
- Reno regular meeting (February 1st).
Jenny Francis of the Tahoe Resource
Conservation District - California Area, and Sue Donaldson of the Nevada
Resource Conservation District - Reno/UNR Area, will be our co-speakers. The
topic will be the Invasive Weeds Programs of both agencies.
- Henderson regular meeting (February 5th).
Fred Edwards,
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will present Rare plant conservation in
Southern Nevada. Synopsis: overview of the Endangered Species Act and how it
fits into the larger conservation picture, opportunities for public involvement
and considerations for shaping the future of rare plant conservation in Southern
Nevada.
January 2007:

Rare Plants and the Nevada Native Plant Society.

David Polivy of the Sierra Business Council (SBC), Truckee, CA, will talk on
the agency’s regional approach to planning for the future of the Sierra
Nevada region. Founded in 1994 and based in Truckee, California, the SBC
views environmental quality as key to the Sierra Nevada’s economic prosperity,
and natural resource conservation as essential to building regional wealth. SBC
is a resource for business leaders, government officials, conservation groups
and other decision-makers seeking solutions to local and regional challenges.
September 2006:
- Henderson regular meeting (Tuesday

Southern Nevada Water Authority, will present Botanical Inventory and
Ecological Restoration Projects along the Las Vegas Wash, Clark County, Nevada.

California's Sweeney Granite Mountains Desert Research Center will
present The Mojave Desert: A Floristic Frontier in a Conservation Black Hole.
- Henderson (March 10th-12th). Community College of Southern Nevada Native
Plant Sale.
- Las Vegas (March 25th). Annual UNLV Native Plant Sale.
February 2006:
- Reno regular meeting (February 2nd). Ann Bollinger,
Graduate Student at UNR will give a talk on Vegetation Recovery and Trends
after Wildfire on Public Lands in the Orovada Area (northern Humboldt Co.).
- Henderson regular meeting (February 6th).
Matt Brooks, Research Scientist with US Geological Survey, will
give a presentation on Invasive Species and Wildfire Research in the
Mojave Desert.
- Reno Field Trip Committee meeting (February 9th).
The field trip planning committee will meet, and consume a potluck dinner, the
evening of February 9th to create the field trip schedule for 2006. If
interested in attending, please contact Bonnie Larsen at 972-0583. John Reid has
agreed to be field trip chair with Bonnie this year, and Janet Bair will be
keeping the meeting notes on her laptop. We look forward to a productive meeting

1st Annual Holiday Potluck and Celebration. Please bring a dish to share
with others, and members are encouraged to bring digital photos that we will run
in the background during our meeting. We will also discuss our field trip
schedule, so please bring your suggestions, your appetite and your good cheer!
- Reno (December 14th). 2nd annual Christmas
Potluck in conjunction with Death Valley Picture Night. Dinner at
5:30 in the lab room just across the court yard from the Herbarium at 920 Valley
Road. Bring a dish, bring yourself, and bring your spectacular pictures and
testimonials of Death Valley, 2005. Power point is not available
in this room but slides would work fine. Or present on a lap-top, an old-fashion
CRT station or, even more old fashion (but still very acceptable)- prints! This
is an informal presentation. NNPS will provide turkey, gravy, dressing, and

November 2005:

Botanist Joey Betzler will give a presentation on Cactus and Succulents
of the Desert Southwest: Mojave Desert, Northern Baja and Anza Borrego.
October 2005:

Author Brian Beffort will tell us about his new book,
Afoot and Afield in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada, a comprehensive
guide to more than 100 hikes within a 3 hour drive of Las Vegas.
- Reno regular meeting (October 6th). Rose Strickland and
Dennis Gighlieri will speak on Eastern Nevada and Western Utah Water Wars.

give a presentation on How to grow plants from cuttings. NOTE DIFFERENT

freeway) the current meeting place.
- Henderson regular meeting (March 7th). Julie Proctor
will present a photographic library representing a multitude of Mojave
Desert plants from the cotyledon stage through flowering. Get ready to play
"Guess That Plant!"
February 2005:
- Reno regular meeting (February 3rd). Dr. Alan Gubanich will
be speaking on the Wintering Birds of Northern Nevada, with references to
the plants that they use in 'normal' years for food sources.
- Henderson regular meeting (February 7th). Elizabeth
Powell will give a presentation that will wet the botanical appetite of
members preparing to view the Mojave wildflower extravaganza expected in
spring 2005. In addition, members will bring in favorite, perplexing, and
unusual plant specimens to share with others.
January 2005:
- 2005 NNPS Board Meeting (January 12th). This will held at
Arnold Tiehm's house with dinner at 5:30 and the meeting commencing at
6:30. If you plan to attend please notify Arnold at 329-1645 or

December 2004:
- NNPS XMAS POT LUCK (December 23rd). This will be at 920
Valley Rd. (same place as November 2004 meeting) starting at 5:30. Bring a
favorite Xmas treat and a potluck dish. In the spirit of Christmas and
learning more about each other we are asking everyone to bring a batch of your
family's favorite Xmas treats: tamales, stollen, gingerbread, etc. (and recipe
to share). If your traditional item is a dessert, please bring a non-desert item
as well so we can balance out the food pyramid at the buffet! RSVP: Christy

November 2004:
- Annual meeting (November 4th). We will be electing new
officers and at-large Board Members. Then Christy Malone will lead a
panel discussion on Small Scale Propagation of Native Plants. This will
be a hands on presentation that will include information, techniques, and
methods for growing plants from seed. This presentation will take place in the
classroom next to the herbarium at 920 Valley Road (look for signs). This is one building
south of (toward the freeway from) the current meeting place. NOTE DIFFERENT
LOCATION FOR THIS MEETING. Gary Monroe will be bringing seeds for about
twenty species of Penstemon. Any members with seed to exchange
please bring it to this meeting. Seed envelopes will be available. Seed
exchange will begin at 7 pm.
October 2004:
- Regular meeting (October 7th). Rose Strickland and Dennis
Ghiglieri will speak on Following in the steps of Ripley and Barneby.
In 2001 they followed the 1944 route of Dwight Ripley and Rupert Barneby as
described in Impressions of Nevada - the countryside and some of the
plants - as seen through the eyes of an Englishman, by Dwight Ripley. Reprinted
in NNPS Occasional Papers no 3.
September 2004:

slide show about the Nature Study Area in Lemmon Valley entitled Swan Lake -
The Backyard Treasure.
February 2004:
- Regular meeting (February 5th). Rebecca Niell, UNR
Graduate Student, will speak on Butterfly uses of native plants.
January 2004:
- Annual Board meeting (Thursday, January 29th). All officers,
Board members, and committee chairs are encouraged to attend, beginning 5:30
pm at Jerry Tiehm's house.
November 2003:
- Regular meeting (November 6th). Peter F. Brussard, Department of
Biology at UNR, will give us a talk entitled Butterflies, their food
plants, and livestock grazing. Included in the talk will be a general
introduction to butterflies, their larval food plants, and their adult nectar
sources.
October 2003:
- Regular meeting (October 2nd). Evert Broderick and Kim Powers
will show us a photo chronicle of their recent trip to northern Ecuador.
They spent time in a mid-elevation cloud forest as well as the paramo, a
wind-swept, high elevation steppe covered with a unique and bizarre flora. A
focus of the presentation is the deforestation of these regions and what one
Ecuadorian foundation is doing to stop the damage
September 2003:
- Regular meeting (September 4th). Alanah Woody, Collections
Manager at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City will speak on Rock Art of
Nevada. Rock art is engravings or paintings on stone and is found throughout
the world. Nevada has a wide diversity of prehistoric and even some historic
rock art ranging in age from as much as 10,000 years ago to historic times. It
is found in a variety of settings and although many questions remain as to it's
function or meaning, all agree that it has great artistic merit and the threat
to it's preservation is on the rise.
May 2003:
- Regular meeting (May 1st). Rich Rust, Biology Professor,

Conservation Director for Friends of Nevada Wilderness, will give a slide show
on 18 new wilderness areas designated in southern Nevada.

- Regular meeting (Nov. 7th). Gary Monroe will show slides and talk about the 2002 NNPS trip to Ash Meadows.

- Regular meeting (Oct. 3rd). Jim Morefield, Botanist with the Nevada Natural Heritage Program, will give a slideshow and talk entitled "Rare and interesting plants of the White Mountains of California and Nevada".

- Regular meeting (Sept. 5th). Ann Pinzl will give a talk entitled "Economic plants of the world - a look at some local markets.

- Regular meeting (May 2nd). Dawn Rafferty, invasive weed specialist with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, will give a presentation on (ob)noxious weeds.

- Grass Identification Class (April 2-3). The University of Nevada, Reno herbarium will be offering a two day class on grass identification. Participants will learn terminology, dissecting techniques with the aid of a dissecting scope, use of keys, and how to collect and press specimens. Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of Intermountain Flora volume 6 to class. Identifications will be limited to flowering material only and participants are encouraged to bring their own unidentified collections to class. Instructors: Arnold Tiehm and Christy Malone.
