- Questions and Answers
4. Old business: unresolved NNNPS ranks from previous meeting agenda
- Phacelia lutea
var. calva - Intermountain Flora indicates "local in n. Owyhee Co., Idaho, nw Humboldt Co., Nev., and e Malheur Co., Oregon." Known from a single site in Nevada, on Sheldon Antelope Range. Add to NNNPS Watch List?
- Sclerocactus nyensis
- recently described from two sites near Tonopah and Warm Springs. Taxonomy is somewhat questionable. Add to NNNPS Watch List?
5. New business: review and status of high-priority species
- (1:00-1:15) Rare bryophytes in Nevada (Lloyd Stark)
- Astragalus beatleyae
- 39 known occurrences, few active impacts or threats. Move to NNNPS Watch List? Remove from state Endangered list?
- Astragalus mohavensis
var. hemigyrus and Eriogonum bifurcatum - status update by Wes Niles. Question: is Astragalus mohavensis var. hemigyrus being confused with A. amphioxys var. amphioxys in southern Nevada?
- Astragalus oophorus
var. clokeyanus - now known from 31 occurrences, mostly on Forest Service, Nellis, and NTS lands. Spring Mountains populations still small and vulnerable; Nellis and NTS populations somewhat intermediate toward var. oophorus. Recommend removal from federal Candidate status?
- Eriogonum sp.
(Churchill Narrows buckwheat) - proposed projects continue to affect habitat. Update on mine project? Recommend for State listing?
- Ivesia kingii
var. eremica - is this still considered a valid taxon? What is its known distribution?
- Lathyrus grimesii
- 57 localized populations, few active impacts or threats. Change NNNPS Endangered status to Watch List?
- Lepidium montanum
var. nevadense - known from 4 occurrences in Nevada, 1 in Oregon. Found in aeolian sand and dune-skirt habitats on alkaline valley bottoms on open BLM lands. Jerry Tiehm indicates that it occurs in a narrow band along and southwest of Pueblo Slough, for about 15 miles in Nevada and 10 miles into Oregon, and suggests Watch List status. Add to NNNPS Watch List? Recommend BLM sensitive?
- Penstemon palmeri
var. macranthus - known from 4+ sites in the mountains of the eastern Lahontan Basin below 5000 feet. Jerry Tiehm indicates that it is rather common in the Stillwater and Humboldt ranges. Increasing threat from nearby use of P. palmeri var. palmeri in seed mixes for revegetation, with possible consequent hybridization. Add to NNNPS Watch List? Recommend BLM sensitive?
- Phacelia inundata
- scattered occurrences in northwestern Nevada and adjacent California and Oregon, on alkaline mud playas and ephemeral pools, including around Washoe Lake. Habitat relatively vulnerable (Jerry Tiehm disagrees), but little additional data yet. Add to NNNPS Watch List? Recommend BLM, USFS sensitive?
- Plagiobothrys glomeratus
- based on recent work by Jerry Tiehm, appears endemic to Nevada on the same soils as Eriogonum robustum. Add to NNNPS Watch List? Recommend BLM, USFS sensitive?
- Primula capillaris
- at least 8 populations now documented, mostly inaccessible, mostly protected by wilderness, and subject to no or rare livestock grazing (there are no longer any sheep permits in known habitat). Remove from State list? Move to NNNPS watch list?
- Primula nevadensis
- 10 known occurrences, mostly on National Park and Wilderness Area lands. Move to NNNPS Watch list?
- Ash Meadows taxa
- is protective management now sufficient to move the following taxa to the NNNPS Watch List? To remove from the state Endangered list? Centaurium namophilum, Enceliopsis nudicaulis var. corrugata, Grindelia fraxino-pratensis, Ivesia kingii var. eremica.
- Spring Mountains taxa
- is protective management now sufficient to move the following taxa to the NNNPS Watch List? Antennaria soliceps, Arenaria kingii ssp. rosea, Astragalus aequalis, Draba jaegeri, Draba paucifructa, Ivesia cryptocaulis, Silene clokeyi, Sphaeromeria compacta, Synthyris ranunculina. To move the following to the NNNPS deleted list? Pedicularis semibarbata var. charlestonensis.
6. New business: review and status of other species
- Eustoma exaltatum
- (Wes Niles - see member comments) An obligate wetland species reported from 2 sites in Nevada impacted by livestock use or urban development. Widespread from California to the southeast U.S. and southward through Mexico and beyond, but never abundant. Only surviving Nevada and eastern Mojave population may be at Red Rock Springs, where endangered by livestock use. Add to NNNPS Watch List?
- Eriogonum corymbosum
var. glutinosum - name changed from var. aureum, which is now considered to be a narrow Utah endemic. See comments by James Reveal.
- Abronia nana
ssp. covillei - a sensitive taxon in California, with only one known occurrence in Nevada. Add to NNNPS Watch List?
- Astragalus robbinsii
var. occidentalis - now known from 37 occurrences, mostly on Forest Service lands, some in Wilderness. Move to NNNPS Watch List?
- Draba sphaeroides
- now endemic to Elko County, since Draba cusickii var. pedicellata was removed to a separate taxon. How common or rare, threatened or secure, is it? Add to NNNPS Watch List?
- Eriogonum holmgrenii
- sufficiently protected in Great Basin National Park to move to NNNPS Watch List? Jerry Tiehm thinks so.
- Frasera pahutensis
- has been synonymized with Frasera albicaulis var. modocensis of northeastern California. Need information on who did this, where, and why.
- Lesquerella goodrichii
- of concern in Utah, known also from eastern Nevada. How common or rare, threatened or secure, is it? Add to NNNPS Watch List?
- Mimulus ovatus
- annual found mostly in the valleys along Sierra Front in western Nevada, perhaps mostly on altered andesite habitat. Considered by monographer David Thompson to be a hybrid taxon. Vulnerable habitat, but no occurrence data yet. Estimated Heritage rank 2-3. Add to NNNPS Watch List?
- Penstemon pahutensis
- now known from 51 occurrences, mostly on NTS, Nellis, and Park Service lands, with few active impacts or threats. Move to NNNPS Watch List?
- Penstemon pudicus
- Limited but locally common at upper elevations of Kawich Range, isolated and remote, no known active impacts or threats. Move to NNNPS Watch List?
- Perityle intricata
- now known from 84 occurrences, mostly on DNWR, Nellis, and NTS lands, few active impacts or threats. Move to NNNPS Deleted list?
- Pinus washoensis
- recent studies have demonstrated fairly conclusively that Washoe pine is identical to the "North Plateau Race" of Pinus ponderosa var. ponderosa, which occurs mainly in Washington, Montana, and southwestern Canada. The Nevada populations appear to be relict stands, but not part of a globally rare taxon. They occur at higher elevations than the more common Sierra Nevada race of P. ponderosa, as would be expected. Any recommended status changes? David Charlet reserves judgement.
- Scutellaria holmgreniorum
- Gary Schoolcraft reports 44 populations in NV at least 1/4 mile apart, with 30 California occurrences, no known threats except minor noxious weed problems. Remove from NNNPS Watch List? Change rank to G3 S3 ?
