NEVADA RARE PLANT WORKSHOP
Wednesday & Thursday, 2-3 April 2008, Reno

GENERAL INFORMATION AND LOGISTICS
http://heritage.nv.gov/nrpw/announce.htm

Dear members, botanical experts, and resource professionals,

The Nevada Native Plant Society's Rare Plant Committee and the Nevada Natural Heritage Program invite you to Reno on Wednesday & Thursday, 2-3 April 2008, to share and discuss new information on rare and at-risk taxa of vascular plants, bryophytes, fungi, lichens, or algae in Nevada, to review their conservation status, and to participate in consensus status recommendations for consideration by state, federal, and private agencies. Only through contributions from experts such as you can we provide the most accurate, up-to-date information and priorities to managers and planners in the public and private sectors. We hope you will be able to attend.

REGISTRATION: there are NO registration costs! (Your time and travel are more than enough!) Simply R.S.V.P. (see below), and you are registered.

TIME AND LOCATION: Wednesday & Thursday, 2-3 April 2008, 9:00 am to 4:30 or 5:00 pm, in Reno. Invitees who R.S.V.P. (jdmore [at] heritage [dot] nv [dot] gov) with plans to attend will receive detailed directions to our meeting room in a follow-up confirmation message.

CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS: The 2007 Workshop decided to experiment with a 2-day format in 2008, to allow for longer presentations (up to 20-30 minutes) of research results and other work in progress relating to rare plants in Nevada. Contributed presentations are welcome and hereby solicited for 2008! Please send a Title, brief Abstract or other description of presentation, and approximate Duration (in minutes, not including Q&A) to Jim Morefield (email: jdmore [at] heritage [dot] nv [dot] gov, post: 901 S Stewart Street, suite 5002, Carson City, NV 89701-5245). Presentations are tentatively scheduled for Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning, with one longer (1-hour) presentation for the Nevada Native Plant Society meeting Thursday evening 7-9 pm.

ONLY AVAILABLE ON ONE DAY? Not a problem! When you R.S.V.P., just indicate which day you will be there, and which agenda items you would like covered on that day. We will do our best to accommodate everyone's schedule, and the agenda order will remain somewhat flexible.

R.S.V.P.: NO LATER THAN Wednesday, 26 March 2008, to Jim Morefield (tel: 775-684-2902, fax: (775) 684-2909, email: jdmore [at] heritage [dot] nv [dot] gov, post: 901 S Stewart Street, suite 5002, Carson City, NV 89701-5245), even if you do not plan to attend!. This will ensure that you receive information about future workshops. If you have already indicated your plans to me, no need to R.S.V.P. again, except for field trip status. If you already indicated you are coming, please check http://heritage.nv.gov/nrpw/people08.htm to make sure you are on the list, and R.S.V.P. if not. IMPORTANT: meeting materials are duplicated based on the number of participants confirmed by the deadline above. Please respond by the deadline, and please inform us of cancellations or of any other people attending with you, so that there will be the right number of materials for everyone.

IMPORTANT LOGISTICS: Transportation between Reno-Tahoe International Airport and the meeting site should be available on the day of the Workshop. Contact Jim Morefield (see above) with your airline, flight number, and scheduled arrival time, and we will try to connect you with a driver. If all else fails, the meeting site is a short taxi ride from the airport. NNPS MEETING: for those of you who can stay into Thursday evening, the Nevada Native Plant Society holds its regular monthly meeting beginning starting at 7 pm on the University of Nevada campus. One of this year's Workshop participants will be giving the evening's presentation. Directions will be available at the Workshop. Additional logistics and directions will be emailed to those indicating their plans to participate.

INTERNET: The Workshop is on the Web at http://heritage.nv.gov/nrpw/. We try to organize the Workshop as much as possible by e-mail and through our home page. If you received this invitation by postal mail, and are able and willing to receive information electronically instead, please e-mail Jim Morefield (jdmore [at] heritage [dot] nv [dot] gov) with your e-mail address, even if you do not plan to attend this year's workshop! We will notify you of future workshops electronically (please keep us updated with your current address), and you can check the Workshop's home page periodically for the latest information, agenda, participant list, at-risk plant lists, member comments, minutes of previous workshops, links to other key web pages, etc. Printed information will also be available at each workshop. The Nevada Natural Heritage Program's web site (http://heritage.nv.gov/) has a wealth of additional information of interest to participants.

AGENDA: As always, the agenda is self-service and equal-opportunity! R.S.V.P. with your requests for new agenda items (jdmore [at] heritage [dot] nv [dot] gov). Items can include program updates and activities, new information, recommended additions, deletions, or changes of at-risk species and/or their statuses, and rare plant issues involving taxonomy, conservation, policy, or other topics of interest to the group. THIS IS YOUR WORKSHOP! Given our time limitations, we do reserve the right to edit and prioritize for relevance and brevity. This year, though, there is still plenty of room! The current working agenda is maintained and available on the Workshop's Web site, along with previous years' agendas.

SEND US YOUR COMMENTS: If you are attending, or ESPECIALLY IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND, please send us (jdmore [at] heritage [dot] nv [dot] gov) any information, comments, ideas, etc., that you would like to contribute to the Workshop, particularly those addressing any of the agenda items (http://heritage.nv.gov/nrpw/agenda08.htm). These will be posted on the Workshop Web site, and made available to all participants at the Workshop.

PARTICIPANT LIST: As an aid for contacting other participants and coordinating travel, we maintain a list of those planning to attend the next workshop on our web site, as responses come in. It will include only name, affiliation, telephone number, work e-mail address (in unlinked text-only format to discourage automated spamming), and any other information, requests, ads, Web link(s), etc., you want displayed. We disclose the Workshop's Web site only to those receiving this invitation; we do not link it or otherwise make it available from any other source. If you prefer to withhold any of your information from the Web site, please let us know when you R.S.V.P. If you need to be put in touch with other participants but do not have Internet access, please contact Jim Morefield (see above).

INVITATIONS: A complete list of names who will receive invitations to the Workshop accompanies this invitation and is posted on the Workshop Web site. If you know of any botanical expert or resource professional NOT on the list who should receive an invitation, please contact Jim Morefield (jdmore [at] heritage [dot] nv [dot] gov, or see above).

VOLUNTEER(S) NEEDED: to keep meeting notes for later use in compiling the minutes. Multiple volunteers means less individual burden and more complete documentation. If you are willing, please let us know when you R.S.V.P. Those with laptop and e-mail capabilities are particularly encouraged. Thank you to Bruce Lund, Jim Holland, Sarah Kulpa, and Dean Tonenna for volunteering at the 2007 Workshop.

THANK YOU to all those who contributed their information, expertise, time, effort, and expense at previous Workshops (listed in previous years' participant lists), and who continue to share information and ideas. We look forward to your participation on April 2-3, 2008.
