RECOMMENDED READINGS

Below is an annotated list of some of the books and general publications we consider useful in identifying, learning about, and working with the flora and fauna of Nevada. It is divided into sections for popular and technical works, then further into groups for plants, animals, and miscellaneous topics. The lay reader will find helpful works in the technical section as well, and is encouraged to scan our annotations for items of interest. This list will always be a work in progress, with some sections yet to be started. The most recently added items are marked with . Your recommendations are always welcome. See also our Virtual Libraries of on-line references and publications. Special thanks to Susan Stead, Nevada Division of Forestry, for her assistance with initial compilation of plant references.

POPULAR WORKS - PLANTS: most of the wildflower books and field guides listed here provide easy, usually illustrated identification of a selection of the most common and/or conspicuous species in an area (exceptions are noted). If you are concerned that a species of interest to you is not covered in one of these publications (a frequent situation), we recommend that you consult some of the technical works, particularly those that are well-illustrated.

TECHNICAL WORKS - PLANTS: there is no single standard reference covering the entire flora of Nevada. We use a large number of references in combination, depending on the plant group and region of the state. The best single reference (including for the lay reader) is the completely illustrated Intermountain Flora series, one volume of which remains to be published, and which covers the northern 3/4 of the state (except the Sierra Nevada). For plant groups and regions not covered by this series, several other references are available.

INTERMOUNTAIN FLORA SERIES

Intermountain flora: vascular plants of the Intermountain West, U.S.A. covers the Great Basin portion of Nevada, plus all of Utah and portions of other surrounding states. It is completely and beautifully illustrated, which makes it highly useful to the lay reader and beginning botanist. Also includes comprehensive identification keys, technical descriptions, taxonomic information, and general habitat and range data. Only volume 2A remains to be published, most taxa of which are now covered in volumes 2-5 of the Flora of North America series (see farther below). Available through the New York Botanical Garden Press. (HOT DEAL: as of summer 2007, the entire set to date was being offered for $350!)

FLORA OF NORTH AMERICA SERIES

Flora of North America north of Mexico is an ongoing series, of which 13 of a projected 30 volumes have been published so far. It is expected to comprise the most current and comprehensive synthesis for bryophytes and vascular plants in North America north of Mexico. It includes keys and descriptions for every species, subspecies, and variety, small and generalized distribution maps for each taxon, generalized habitat data, and line drawings for about 1/3 of the taxa. While the information is less detailed and specific to Nevada than in the Intermountain Flora series, it is highly useful in covering all of the state, in putting Nevada plants in their continental context, and in providing treatments for several plant groups that are outdated or not yet available in Intermountain Flora.
